2010 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show Highlights

Kitchen & Bath Industry Show 2010

Kitchen & Bath Industry Show 2010

This year KBIS made another return to Chicago’s McCormick place to present the latest and greatest in Kitchen & Bath products and trends.  I scanned over dozens of vendor booths and came up a handful of notables.  Of course when entering KBIS, Kohler always wins my immediate attention considering their booth is so predominantly located.  To view their sparkling new bathroom trends, it would be easiest to visit their website directly.

Ann Sacks, part of the Kohler Interior Group has emerged with a gorgeous new wood tile called Indah Carved Teak in three designs “weave, circles and fingerprint.”  Although they are safe for the bathroom, I more so envision these 12 x 12 panels for use in main living and entry areas of a home.  They are stunning up close and personal.

I love the idea of building out the side shower walls to incorporate these rails for soaps and misc. shower products.  The boxy recessed niches are a thing of the past.  They have also included coordinating decorative trim banding on the walls and used schluter on the corners to finish the edges out for a clean designer look.  It is about time we evolve!

As much as I love to visit trade shows for the obvious reasons, I also pay attention to the creative designs and ideas used within each vendors booth.  These contemporary aluminum sticks can be used as interior room dividers or better yet, as outdoor decor that would make a soothing clacking noise in the wind.

Shredded hanging fabrics from the ceiling caught my eye.  I have seen string curtains used before, but these large strands of fabric would make for a great room separator, informal door or dramatic ceiling treatment in dark fabrics.

I especially love this wire water display surrounding the MAAX booth.  It was custom designed for the show and is completely ingenious the way the water neatly falls from the above opening and trickles down each strand of metal wire into the lower basin.

Richelieu Hardware is a company that offers almost anything from fixtures, specialty hardware, decorative hardware and lighting.  Naturally, I gravitated towards the light… flexible RGB LED lighting that is!  Professional hard wiring is required for the transformer, but the rest of the lighting strips are literally a snap to install.  I also like that these strips have an adhesive backing for easy application and they can be bent in every direction.  I had to test it out. so with permission I did just that.

Another flexible material that caught my eye was Hanex Solid Surfaces.  This material can be bent and shaped during fabrication as seen in this shower display, and it also comes with a list of  additional advantages.  78 rich colors and textures,  inconspicuous seams, scratch and stain resistant for easy maintenance, durability is stronger than stone, resists heat, mold, chemicals, pollutants and bacteria, environmentally friendly,  renewable and repairable… and the list goes on.

There was also a very special find of a Spanish contemporary cabinetry company looking to expanded its distributorship to the States. We are currently in talks to launch their brand in the U.S. via my upcoming online furniture showroom!  It is a very exciting product line of kitchen cabinetry, kitchen accessories, solid surfaces and closet door systems that meet the mark in quality and affordability.  For purchasing or questions, please inquire on through my contact page.

Framed Art Collages – Arranging Memories

Wall Art Collage

Wall Art Collage

The origin of the Art Collage has spanned the last few centuries and  reemerged in the early 20th century as a novelty art form.  The French term collage was coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso from the root word “coller” meaning glue.  The  “collage” was used to describe modern art paintings portraying diverse groupings of images within a canvas, or to describe various groupings of  newspaper and magazine clippings that were glued to a variety of mediums.  We now see collages within blogs, fashion magazines, interior design websites and countless other outlets, all of which still attempt to portray and connect a series of relative ideas to tell a story.  Most recently, the interior design trend of using collage of frame pieces of art has solved many design faux pas’.   Over the years, we all collect family photographs, children’s artwork, framed mirrors, fine art, love letters, sketches, wall sculpture,  etc.   Sure, we can try to find an open wall to randomly place individual keepsakes,  but that tends to look scattered and in turn, compromises the scale of a room, the walls and its vocal points.  You can begin to understand the impact of the collage by drawing from these examples and implementing in your own homes or offices.

By grouping these random artworks in their unique frames, you can simply take a countless number of art pieces to create one cohesive art installation.  It will not only serve your decor, but will also be the new talking piece of your home.

If your art frames are less than par, you can choose to reframe them, or unify all of your frames with a new coat of paint in one or a few shades to coordinate with the room.   At this stage, you may also want to consider re-matting the photos in consistent shades or on antique papers or patterns.  You may also chose to reprint all of your photos in black and white, or all in sepia to blend together.  This gives the grouping consistency if you prefer a unified look.

Now that you are hooked on the idea of framed art collage, your first step will be to choose a suitable display wall and measure the wall area where the art collage will be arranged. Use masking tape to create a collage boundary on the wall and also create another masking tape area of the same size on the floor.  Gather your art pieces and begin playing with layout ideas within your floor tape boundaries.  Decide if you will be modifying the photo frames, mat board or reprinting the photographs. Tweak the artwork arrangement (if necessary) after your modifications.  Photograph the arrangement as an installation reference, review once more and begin your installation!

Stripes, The Bold & Beautiful

Combining Colorful Stripes

Varied Stripe Thickness

Fun and flirty, dramatic and sexy… stripes are proven to be one of the most known patterns used in decorating our homes and textiles throughout the ages.  So much in fact, that a book was recently released by Michel Pastoureau titled The Devil’s Cloth, A History of Stripes.  The book is more in tune with the fashion world of stripes, but that was most likely the method in which we acquired the idea to begin decorating our domains with it.   Pattern breathes life and character into the surfaces that they cover.  Regardless of how we wear them or place them in our homes, stripes and all patterns alike are essential in the world of decor and self expression.

Staggered Stripes often work best in larger spaces since they can handle a break in room flow… they also make for great optical illusions!

Whether you have chosen to introduce stripes into your life through  paint, rugs, tile, fabrics, artwork, wallpaper or clothing, you have  boldly contributed to the history of pattern and vitality of design.  Cheers!

Travel & Architecture: Amsterdam, The Venice of The Netherlands

I amsterdamI amsterdam sign at Museumplein

In my recent travels to Europe I had the opportunity to visit Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.  Of the three destinations I had only allotted a mere 24 hours in Amsterdam with the notion that my other destinations would have more to offer, both architecturally and culturally.  I stand humbly corrected.  Of the three destinations, I was most pleasantly surprised by Amsterdam’s stunning vistas and richness in history and a culture that only left me wanting more.

After creating the world’s first Stock Exchange in 1602,  Amsterdam (coined after its route origin from the dam in the river Amstel) became the world’s most important port during the Dutch Golden Age.  Although it is now known for more fringe attributes, I was astounded to learn that Amsterdam has more spectacular canals than Venice, along with countless number of bridges and residential architecture from a diverse array of schools of design such as Gothic, Dutch Renaissance, French Baroque, modern day contemporary, along with its very own school of style, Amsterdamse.  This remarkable blend of structures, including the famous “dancing houses”, astutely line four main canals that form concentric half-circles through the city centre and flow between the Amstel river and IJ bay.  It is truly a sight to be seen.

The Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam, known as “Java Island” is a marvel of modern architectural design.  Constructed in 1995 and designed by 2 artists, Guy Rombouts and Monika Droste, this small island is composed of 9 “fool’s bridges” over 4 canals.  This area is packed with narrow rows of houses designed by 19 different architects.   You will find pedestrian and cyclist traffic to the north and a shopping promenade to the south.

Amsterdam is the business and financial capital of the Netherlands and, despite its well-to-do status, is also one of the world’s largest bicycle-friendly cities that includes all socio-economic groups of people.  I was surprised to see the hundreds of bicycles in rows and, sometimes unorganized, piles of tightly parked bicycles at almost every street corner.  I found the city to be clean, the people genuine and dining to exceed my every expectation.   Walking the streets and feeling the essence of these easy going Dutch while soaking in the beauty and history of this unique waterway city makes for a vacation worthy of an extended stay.

From Runway to Her Way- Chicago Interior Designer Jordan Guide

From Runway to Her Way- Chicago Interior Designer Jordan Guide

From runway to her way (click to view)

Jordan Guide left a model’s life to become a designing woman

Who: Chicago/Burr Ridge-based interior designer.

Why: She’s turning heads with her young, energetic designs and getting cool residential and commercial commissions. She also has launched her own online wall decal company (walltat.com), which sells peel-and-stick wall art by designers and artists from around the world.

Her look/aesthetic: “I like clean lines; accessories and art with intent … function, flow and unity.”

Favorite color (of the moment): “Mixed shades of gray.”

Early inspiration: Grandfather’s in-home design studio (he designed logos) at Lake Point Tower, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and a collage of logo designs on the walls. Also, the Bauhaus furniture and fixtures put together by her grandmother, an interior decorator, that filled the living spaces.

Recently finished: Not-your-conservative-guy offices for a young trading firm in the West Loop. The guys wanted their work space to look and live like a sophisticated bachelor pad. Thus the hot tub on the roof deck. The living room with a built-in entertainment center and 60-inch LCD TV. The sexy spiral staircase to an upstairs party loft equipped with bar, fireplace and lounge seating.

Other notables: She proved “accessible” doesn’t have to look institutional, designing a luxurious kitchen that also is highly functional (pull-down cabinet innards; faucet at the fore of the sink) for a client with physical challenges.

Major award: In 2007 (at age 27), won a coveted Design Excellence Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers for that accessible kitchen.

Major dish: Her previous life as a model. Did ads for Marshall Field’s, Sears, Calvin Klein. Did runway in Paris.

Reachable: Guide works as an independent contractor for Barbara Pallat Interiors, in Pallat’s studio in Burr Ridge and in Guide’s Chicago studio. Reach her at jordanguidedesign.com.

Guide’s guide to what she loves

We asked Jordan Guide for a few design products she loves, with the caveat being it’s got to be available at retail.

1. Purist Suite bathroom from Kohler: “It’s open and contemporary,” Guide says. “I want that bathroom.” (The Kohler Store, Suite 100, Merchandise Mart, Chicago, us.kohler.com. Some prices: about $812 for the Wading Pool lavatory (sink); about $6,200 for the BubbleMassage bath.)

2. Bridge Coffee + Side Table: From West Elm, this low, chunky wood coffee table gets straddled by a glossy white/gray side table. “It’s rustic meets new,” Guide says. ($299 and $179, westelm.com)

3. Felted Wool Stones: “Instead of a beanbag chair or cubes to sit on, these are really fun, felted wool,” Guide says. “They’re like big boulders.” ($298-$595, vivaterra.com)
